Overseas travel tips

Every country, culture, and location is different. Be mindful of this when stepping outside of your home country. these are important steps to take before traveling to a foreign destination

1) Make sure it is safe
Research, talk to travel agents, talk with people that have traveled there..,. do whatever it takes to make sure you feel comfortable going there. Safety should be the top priority when planning a trip.

2) Learn some history
This can be a fun project in school or as a badge. For World Thinking Day, try learning about this country and sharing the knowledge with others.

3) Research the currency, language...
Do you speak the same language? If not be prepared to use google translate, an app, a book, or more. If you don't speak their language, are they prepared to handle yours. Many countries are prepared for foreign travelers. Many have signs suitable for foreigners and many citizens may be fluent in your language. Check it out. Also be mindful of currency and have the correct currency on hand.
4) Know the basic geography and distance
Know what countries surround it and how far it is from home. Be mindful on time change, jet lag, and the amount of time it takes to get there. Keep in mind what season it is there. While it may be summer here in the USA, it is winter in Australia.

5) Learn about their food and hygiene
Will it be safe to drink the water there? Some developing countries do not have sanitary water, so be prepared to filter it. Some foods also may be potentially foreign to our diet. Learn what foods are their specialty and are their typical meal. Be on the look out to try some of their foods. Learn what times they eat meals to learn when to expect restaurant crowds. Know if you need to leave a tip or not.

6) Culture knowledge
Learn about their culture. Some places have ways people expect you greet them so be prepared. For instance, in some Latin America countries people are greeted with a kiss on the cheek or even both. Learn what is expected there. Some words or actions could be considered insulting in their country so learn what to say and not say.
7) Keep tabs on the country news
Monitor the news in that country. Make sure it is still safe to travel their. If there are any big events during the time you are traveling there, be prepared. For instance, if the Olympics is expected to be going on at the same time and place you are going to expect crowds. If a new development occurs you should be mindful as to how that may impact your trip. Check the State Department Website, as it gives travel advice, warnings, and restrictions.
