South America and Central America have a variety of recipes that will bring there culture to your kitchen.


Cholado Colombianos (Colombia)

This is a drink, dessert, and treat wrapped up into one cup. It originates from the Valle del Cauca region in Colombia. It consists of crushed ice, fresh fruit, condensed milk, passion fruitl, and Colombian blackberry syrup, and is topped with shredded coconut and a maraschino cherry. Since Colombia is so close to the equator, this treat is used as a way to stay cool. Sopa De Frijoles (Honduras)

Beans are a common ingredient in lots of South America countries. Beans are a cheap, coomon, protein packed ingredien making it great to use in cooking. Curried Mango (Trinidad and Tobago)

This islands cooking is known as a carnival full of flavors, exotic ingredient, and its broad variety. The island itself has some of the most diverse flora and fauna on the planet. Tembleque (Puerto Rico)

Boucanage (French Guinea)

Chilean Empanadas (Chile)

Although Empanadas can be found all around the world (particularly in Latin American countries) each empanad has a unique flavor. The empanad originated from Spain before finding its way to South America and Chile. The word “empanadar” means enbreaded. True to this, the empanada is meat, corn, and other ingredients all stuffed into a bread pocket. The Chilean empanada that is most popular is called Pino. The pino is filled with meat, onions, hard-boiled eggs, black olives, and raisins. This strange combination creates an orgianal flavor and can be ordered all across Chile. Churchills (Costa Rica)

This snow cone treat was created in the city of Puntarenas in the 1940s. It is named after the businessman nicknamed “Quinico.” He would go and get snow cones all across town. He would mix a variety of strange flavors so they wanted to create one flavor out of it. He resembled Winston Churchill, and so they decided to name him after the flavor. Bolinhas de arroz (Brazil)

These fried rice balls are similar to hush puppies, but with rice. They can be found throughout the Southeast coast of Brazil. They are a common street food or appetizer. Chipa guasu (Paraguay)

This is famous side dish that is served throughout Paraguay. It has an interesting combination of corn, water, onions, eggs, cinnamon, milk, and cheese as it’s ingredients. This dish was created during the 1850s. A war was defistsing the country and since food was scare, people began to make This dish out of corn. Corn is plentiful in Paraguay, making it a popular ingredient. The word chipa refers to a corn based cake. Guasu means it is large. Therefor it is a large corn based cake.
