Savannah is a quaint town in Georgia filled with museums, historic sites, shops, and more. Most importantly it was where Juliette Gordon Low was born, buried, and started Girl Scouts. Read this post to become inspired to travel in Juliette's footsteps.

Learn about the town

- Take a trolley tour or a guided tour around town. This is a good introduction to Savannah as it helps one get a feeling of the town.

- Visit the Massie Heritage Center to learn about the city of Savannah and what it has to offer.

- Walk around and enjoy the many squares of the town. There are 22 historic squares throughout Savannah, each allowing nature to blend in with the town. Check out a few and make a list of your favorite.

GS sites

- Visit the gravestone of Juliette Gordon Low. She rests at Laurel Grove Cemetery, a place lined with trees and Spanish moss.

- First Headquarters is a must do. This used to be the carriage house of Juliette's adult house (the Andrew Low house). The first meeting of what would later become Girl Scouts, was here. Hence it is considered the birthplace of Girl Scouts. Today the site offers programs and acts as a GS shop.

- Juliette Low Birthplace. This is where she was born and raised. To truly get the GS experience, this is an important activity to do. Plan activities there such as a pinning ceremony, a badge workshop, or another activity.

- Andrew Low House. First Headquarters is located on this piece of property. It is a good idea to also tour the Andrew Low House to comprehend the lifestyle Juliette lived.

Non Girl Scout Sites

- See a show at Historic Savannah Theater. This is the one of the oldest theaters in the USA that is still in operation.

- Tour a candy shop. Tour River Street Sweets or Savannah's Candy Kitchen and see how taffy is made. The best part is you get to taste fresh candy.

- Dolphin Boat Tour. Take a day out on the Savannah River to enjoy the town from the water. With luck you may get to see a dolphin.

Places to explore and shop

- Walk along river Street. This street is full of little boutiques, shops, restaurants, and more. This was one of my favorite streets and I could spend hours exploring the little alleys, shops, and more. This is a good spot to take a packed lunch and enjoy the view or watch the sunset along the river.

- City Market. At the center of town is a few blocks where the southern lifestyle comes to life. Packed with shops, restaurants, statues, artwork, and more, it is a focal point of the town. It is bursting with life, personality, and southern culture. It has a blend of the historic architecture and the modern style of living, making it a great spot to walk along and explore.

Day trips

- Tybee Island is about thirty minutes from Savannah. This seaside town is loaded with activities. Climb the Tybee Island lighthouse, walk along the beach, and more. Earn the Coastal Georgia Badge at the Marine Science Center. They have a marine biologist show Girl Scouts around and inform them about the wildlife. This was one of my favorite activities because we got to catch fish with only a net to examine them.

- Old Fort Jackson brings people into the past. With its brick fortification it has stood for over 200 years. Take a tour of the fort and learn its history.

Museums

- Savannah History Museum walks one through the transformation of Savannah. Some of the features there include the Forest Gump bench, civil war facts, and more.

- Georgia State Railroad Museum. This is located near the Savannah History Museum in Tricentennial Park.

- Check out the Telfair Academy public art museum. It is located in a stately mansion and contains art, sculptures, paintings, and more.

Eats

- The Pirates House is a themed restaurant. Step into the past of Savannah, filled with pirates and maritime mischief.

- Mrs. Wilkes Dinning Room. Served family style comfort food there is certainly enough food for everyone to enjoy.

- Leopold's Ice Cream has served Girl Scouts for generations. It is often crowded so think about ordering ahead or to go.

- The Olde Pink House is a formal restaurant with delicious food. It takes guests back in time to Southern luxury.
